An hour after her visit with Monica and Roland Dickerson Maggie was still sitting at one of the outdoor tables at Le Canard. She’d bought Mila a sugar crêpe which the child was alternately gnawing on and flinging bits to the pigeons and songbirds in the square.

Maggie wasn’t sure what to make of her conversation with Monica and Roland. It was true they didn’t seem all that cut up over Kitty’s death. From what Maggie had known of Kitty, maybe that shouldn’t be too surprising. But they had done their fair share of weird looks to each other—almost as if they were warning each other not to say too much.

Or is that just me being paranoid and all detective-y?

She sipped her coffee and glanced at her cellphone. The last time she checked in with Grace, everything was fine on the home front. Laurent was working in the grape shed with Jean-Luc making sure the grapes were dry and undamaged before they could be transported to the crusher.

This was literally the first time Maggie had had to herself in two weeks. As much as she wanted to confront Grace with the lie about Zouzou’s paternity she really needed to clear her mind of petty distractions for just one hour before jumping back in.

Her phone rang in her hand.

Looks like I’m not going to get that hour.

“Hey, Grace,” Maggie said. “Everything okay?”

“Yes, of course, darling,” Grace said. “Honestly, I’m not sure how to feel about your constant questioning of my abilities as the children’s caretaker for a single morning. Do you really think they’ll all drink Drano if you or Mimi aren’t here to prevent it?”

Maggie felt her irritation rise.

“Not at all,” Maggie said tersely, her eyes on Mila swinging her legs and feeding the pigeons. Especially since the only one really in danger of doing that is with me.

“I’m just calling to ask you a favor. I didn’t get a chance yesterday with the feast and all.”

“If this is about letting Eric photograph the kids, Laurent already answered you.”

“I see,” Grace said abruptly. “I didn’t know you took orders from Laurent now.”

That did it. Maggie clenched her fists and blew out a sharp breath. She had been seriously hoping to have one drama free morning before submerging herself into life these days with Grace.

“And I didn’t know you felt that lying to me was an okay part of our friendship,” Maggie said.

Grace sucked in a sudden gasp. “What on earth are you talking about?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Only the fact that Zouzou is Connor’s child and you told me she wasn’t. Let’s start with that.”

Maggie heard Grace cover the phone and talk to someone on the other end before coming back.

“I’m sorry, Maggie,” she said.

“That’s it? You’re sorry?” The anger had bubbled up in her chest and it felt too good to let it go just yet. “It wasn’t even a lie of omission although that would have been bad enough. You out and out lied to me! Even though you
